John Virtue

Patrick Davies Contemporary Art is proud to stage a solo presentation of works by John Virtue at the 2025 London Art Fair. It will feature paintings, works on paper, and monotypes representing key moments from Virtue's illustrious career.

For over two decades, the gallery has had the privilege of working with Virtue, one of the UK’s most esteemed painters. A monumental London panorama from his celebrated 2005 National Gallery solo exhibition is among the significant works sold.

Renowned for working in black and white, John’s work captures the interplay between figuration and abstraction. His connection to place - be it Devon, the Exe estuary, London, Italy, or Norfolk - deeply informs his practice.

During the fair, Virtue will be in conversation with Calvin Winner, Director of Gainsborough’s House. Calvin has a deep understanding of John’s work, having curated a solo exhibition at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich, in 2014.

In 2019, a monograph covering over forty years of John's work was published by ALBION Ridinghouse. This 285-page illustrated volume, with critical text by Paul Moorhouse, ex-TATE and previously Senior Curator, 20th Century Collections at the National Portrait Gallery, provides a sweeping overview of 40 years of Virtue’s artistic evolution.

Virtue’s work is held in prestigious collections worldwide, including TATE, London; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven; the British Museum; the Victoria and Albert Museum; the Government Art Collection (UK); the Arts Council of England; and The Courtauld Institute.
